What is Spirituality?
When a human being becomes aware of the true existence, purpose of its life and birth, and consciously, chooses the path to fulfill that purpose, that very path is called spirituality.
The Spiritual Journey
It's a personal journey of feeling connected to something bigger than ourselves. Like the vast ocean, the deeper we explore, the more our soul is nourished. As we grow more deeper or practice in spirituality, we begin to reflect the qualities of the supreme energy — what we call 'Onkar'.
Spirituality is not just about rituals or reading sacred books. As Sant Gobind Ram Ji explained in one of his Satsangs: when a child begins school, they start by learning letters, then simple words, then sentences, and eventually full paragraphs. In the same way, spiritual texts and rituals are important — they lay the foundation. But true growth happens when we understand the meaning behind those words and actions. What are the rituals about? What lies beyond them? How do they help us move closer to Almighty- 'Onkar'?
Simple Steps to Begin the Journey
At its heart, spirituality is about looking within and asking ourselves:
Are we living the life we're meant to live?
Do our actions reflect our true inner self?
Are we being honest with ourselves?
True spirituality means regularly checking in with ourselves, making changes when needed, and choosing growth over judgment. It's less about pointing fingers at others and more about improving ourselves.
Sant Gobind Ram Ji often says that spirituality begins with self-realization, learning to balance our conscious and subconscious mind. The purer we become inside, the more naturally spiritual we become. There's no need to pretend. If we find ourselves faking it, it simply means we have more to learn, and that's okay. A true spiritual Master can help guide us back to the right path.
One beautiful teaching from Sant Ji encourages us to imagine a second version of ourselves watching everything we do. Ask yourself: How do I come across to others? Am I acting in line with my inner truth? Am I hiding frustration or pain behind a smile?
Self-Reflection Questions
This kind of self-reflection helps us see our true self:
How do I come across to others?
Am I acting in line with my inner truth?
Am I hiding frustration or pain behind a smile?
The more honest we are with ourselves, the more we grow spiritually.
